Les’ 2012 Ford Escape XLT

Les bought his Ford Escape in May of 2015. It’s a 2012 XLT, and he calls it the Prime Minister. The PM has a 2.5L inline 4 cylinder engine (not motor), with 171 HP at 6000rpm and 171 ft-lbs of torque at 4500rpm, with a towing cap of 3500 lbs. The Escape is Les’ daily driver and not a work truck. For work, he uses an old 89’ Chevy C1500. So, let’s find out what’s special about the Prime Minister. Les, how did you become a gearhead? I think I became a gear head as soon as I did my own oil changes. Then came brake pads and renting a ball joint press and trying to save money on car repairs. Now, the only thing I haven’t done is an engine swap… which wont be long. But hopefully not on the Prime Minister… Tell us more about your Escape – what modifications have you made? The Ford Escape had no accessories on it when we bought it. Right away we installed 3″ Aries side steps, a U-Guard Chrome Bull Bar, and a K&N Filter. Then my OCD kicked in and on went the SES chrome mirror and door handle covers. Next was the Husky Custom Mud Guards, Aries Custom Floor Mats, L.E.D. bulbs on the exterior and the interior, Xenon Phillips head lights, and then the Reese smoked out Red L.E.D. trailer hitch light. After getting Cooper Discover winter tires on stock rims, summer came and a set of RTX SMS 17” Chrome rims covered in Cooper CS5 Grand Touring tires were a necessity. What are your favorite upgrades? What are you planning on upgrading next? The side steps, bull bar and RTX wheels are the mods we could not do without. As far as future mods, a L.E.D. third brake light is tops on the short list. Gabriel Beaulieu is a 17-year old living in Quebec City. And he isn’t letting his young age get in the way of his passion – upgrading and tuning cars! Gabriel, how did you become a gearhead? When I was younger, I always liked to play video games and to create cars, like in Grand Theft Auto. But I was playing the games not because I like shooting and guns – I was playing for the cars! First I bought dirt bikes and quad and now I have my FIRST REAL CAR! I just recently got my driver’s license, and this is my daily drive car. I plan to go to many meets! Next week I am going to Eurocracy Montreal. Tell us more about this GTI – what’s going on under the hood? It has a 1.4″ drop – just keep in mind that the roads in Quebec City are extremely broken down! With a resonator delete modification, I upgraded to a K&N Cold Air Intake, and installed 3SDM wheels. There’s more I want to do, but I am building on a 17-year old’s budget! What are your favorite upgrades? What are you planning on upgrading next? I LOVE my tail lights! They make my car look so aggressive. My 3SDM wheels are just awesome and make my car look great! Finally, I love my new springs because this car needs to be low. I want to go Stage 1+. I want to buy new coil overs and I want to paint my rear bumper and side skirt. GasBuddy Who isn’t looking to save money, especially when it comes to filling up your tank on your next long road trip? Save some serious change with GasBuddy, the app that shows you the cheapest gas stations around your present location. The prices displayed by the app are based on user reports, and if you start updating a station’s prices you’ll win points and maybe even win free gas. Torque Pro If your passion is cars, this app is for you. Download it for accurate readings of your speed timings and Co2 emissions on a dime. Torque Pro even has a turbo boost feature for cars that support MAP and MAF sensors. It’s also packed with a video recording system and a GPS. The downside is that it only works on vehicles from 1996 onwards. Glympse Are you traveling with friends as part of a convoy, or maybe you want to let someone know that you’re on your way? Simply send them a “Glympse” to share your location and estimated time of arrival through the app itself, or through a web link! And don’t worry, the Glympse self-destructs so your privacy is always secure. This app is perfect for coordinating your next big meet-up or simply checking in locations. ParkMe It’s a headache to look for parking spaces in an unfamiliar area or city. Which is why ParkMe is a great app. It will show you the closest and cheapest parking options using your smartphone’s location. You’ll be able to browse parking rates, see parking space availability, reserve and pay for parking slots with your phone, and even set a parking timer so you never forget to refill that meter!

Steve’s 2013 Chrysler 300 SRT8

With a 426 Stroker long block motor, a Whipple Supercharger making almost 800 RWHP, and Air Lift performance bags for a killer suspension, Steve Edgerton has built the baddest SRT8 ever. Steve’s mayhem2.9 was a winning build in last month’s contest for making your ride famous on TDot Performance’s social media. But that’s not the only reason we’re featuring his beautiful Chrysler on here. Of all the cool cars and trucks that were submitted our way, this ride really stands out to us. So, let’s take a closer look at Steve’s build to find out what’s hiding under the hood. Steve, how did you become a gearhead? I became a gear head I think at a very young age. I was born in England and when we came to Canada my family was really into soccer and never into cars. I started watching Nascar when I was around 10 and it just grew on me. I never took Auto Shop in high school but as soon as I had my first car I started to tinker with it. Since then I have been hooked and I’ve built many cars. This has been by far my biggest build and also by far my favorite. Tell us more about mayhem2.9 – what’s going on under the hood? My car is a 2013 Chrysler 300 SRT8. I have always been a fan of this car as it screams luxury and performance, basically an all around sleeper. As for the performance specs on the car: – It is a full weight (no reduction at all!) SRT that has had the 392 pulled out and sent to Arrington Performance to have it bored and stroked to a 426 Long Block with MAHLE forged 2618 pistons. The heads have been cleaned and re-worked. – I run A2Speed 90mm TB with A2Speed valve covers with a built-in catch can option running duel catch cans, as well as an Arrington Carbon fiber short ram intake. – The car was originally 772 RWHP with a Procharged D1 on it but this year I upgraded to a 2.9L Whipple running 95 lbs. injectors for 770 RWHP on 14 lbs. boost. – A Paramount Performance transmission is installed running a factory driveshaft and rebuilt rear end running the stock gear ratio of 3.06 gears. – I have an oversized whipped coolant pump to help cool the blower. It runs a 2 stage fuel pump that will support up to 1500 HP with Dash 10 feed and dash 8 return lines. – Monitoring all the vitals are 6 AutoMeter gauges – 3 on the pillar and 3 in the dome panel. – The car rides on Air Lift performance bags with 30 way damping with 2 pumps and an oversized tank to ensure it is all set for the strip and the track. – It sits on Rohana Wheels RFX5 20 x 9.5 in the front and 20 x 11 in the rear with the new 2017 Continental Extreme Contact Sports 245 45 20 in the front and 275 40 20 in the rear. – Flowmaster 3″ Cat-Back Exhaust with Kingdigit Electronic cut outs. – It runs a 2 step controller to launch the car with a Hurst Line lock to ensure the tires are heated up at the track. When I ran the car on the strip it ran on 17″ Bogarts with 325 45 17 M&H drags on it. – I have upgraded the stock Brembos to Hellcat 6-piston Brembos on Hawk Performance pads. – For visuals, my car has an APR front splitter with a custom 1 of 1 aluminum hood with Carbon Fiber APR heat extractors recessed in. It also has a Carbon Creations deep dish grill to get air to the Supercharger Rad and factory Rad. – It has a rear window spoiler and lighting is Custom Halo color shifting/Chasing built by HiOnlumens out of the USA. With so many upgrades, what are your favorites? What are you planning on upgrading next? My favorite upgrades are the Whipple, the 426 motor and the Airlift performance Bags. My next upgrade is a custom Wicker Bill wing extender I am working on in partnership with an Auto Cad student that builds custom car parts as a starting business. What do you use your ride for and how do you enjoy it? The car is a daily driver that I use to commute back and forth to work from Whitby to Scarborough in all the seasons. On weekends, if I am not with my family, I spend time working on it or at meets or the track. I also spend a lot of time with Mopars of Toronto – a huge Mopar group that spans across Ontario. The Car will be at GTALX this weekend, a local car show held once a year in Brampton, as well as weekly Saturday nights at a local show in Ajax at the Canadian Tire. I will be flat bedding the car to Texas in August for a huge show of approximately 1,300 Mopars. It’s called We Are Mopar and it’s being held at the Texas motor speedway. You really have a great build! Thanks for sharing it with us! The amount of people that come up to me weekly because of the car, all ages, to talk to me about it and the compliments I get on the car are very flattering. It touches me every time! VW: No More Diesel Cars in USA

This week was a busy one for the auto industry. As top vehicle manufacturers announced their major shifts towards electric vehicles, Volkswagen delivered news of its own. The company is saying goodbye to its diesel line-up in the US. Which means we are seeing the end of the “clean diesel” initiative which saw 1 in 5 VW cars sold in the US sporting the TDI logo. Well, the show’s over, folks. Volkswagen’s North American operations chief has openly confirmed that the era of affordable clean, green diesel powertrains is over for the company. And while this comes as no surprise given their emissions scandal, many were suggestion diesel would make a quick come back. The 2016 Golf, Jetta, and Passat sporting diesel engines are under stop-sale until the EPA gives its approval on a technology solution which takes VW’s emissions back into the norm. Volkswagen’s prosed fix is expected to gain regulatory approval as early as next month. And everyone assumed the company would apply that same technology to its new 2017 diesel models. But what we see instead is that the high cost of this technology coupled with VW’s suffered brand image following dieselgate have sealed the TDI’s fate in USA. “We will still offer diesel in specific products and packages where it seems appropriate,” says Hinrich Woebcken, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “I wish to make clear that the push for diesel for the brand is done” in North America. But he also went on to imply that the future of the VW TDI was apparent long before. “Because of upcoming regulations, the diesel would have seen a limited future, regardless” of the scandal.” So, what does all this really mean? We’ve (probably) already seen the last of the diesel Golf, Jetta, Beetle, and Passat. Just maybe, the premium-priced Touareg might be offered with a diesel engine. And even if the TDI survives in certain niche applications, the company is taking a headstrong shift towards electric models. But before you attribute the change of direction to high corporate ethics, keep in mind that some regulators have successfully argued that Volkswagen needs to make a corporate commitment towards the sale of a large number of electric vehicles as a part of its court-ordered settlement. But after all is said and done, VW’s priority still remains to quickly resolve their current emissions violation case. And whilte it’s still ongoing, the company’s reputation continues to suffer. “Our first priority is to implement the TDI fix. We want to do it professionally using the buyback/fix option in a very German, engineered way. We are still in the approval process, and preparing the dealers. First and foremost is to solve this at a high satisfaction level, fix it, and go on from there.” said Woebcken.

Drivetrain Mods: Putting Power to The Ground

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about a fast car? It’s probably a super powerful engine. Yes, but even the most modded out engine can’t get your ride movingti without the hard ‘behind the scenes’ work of the drivetrain. Its often underestimated components are vital to your engine’s efficient performance and power output. So, it’s worthwhile to understand how this complicated mechanical system works. As well as what can be done to improve it. The components that make up your drivetrain all work together to transfer power from the transmission to the wheels. This is what moves your vehicle forward. Your drivetrain is made up of a driveshaft, CV joints, a differential, axle shafts, and U-joints. The Transmission System Your ride could be decked out with the meanest motor to power up its wheels… but without a good transmission system, you’re not going anywhere fast. The transmission system works as a magnifier for an engine’s twisting force. Its gears provide the additional leverage needed for faster acceleration, resulting in torque. And you know that when you have more torque, you’re enjoying greater horsepower in the lower RPM range for quicker starts and improved towing. As the load increases, the transmission system continues to change its gears to keep your engine working in optimal RPMs.

The Differential Similar to the transmission system, your vehicle’s differential is tasked with multiplying your engine’s torque. But that’s not all. Your differential’s ring and pinion gear take your engine’s power and transfer it to the driveshaft. It then turns it 90 degrees and sends it on its way through the axles, and finally to the wheels. But how does the differential ensure power is transferred evenly to both wheels around corners? Special spider gears located inside the differential assembly allow the outside wheel to travel farther when you’re cornering. This improves your traction and reduces tire wear. If you want to tune your differential, you can, easily, by installing a ring and pinion gear with a custom gear ratio. This is a perfect mod for improving your ride’s acceleration after installing monster tires, or lowering your dragster’s quarter-mile times.

Short Tube vs Long Tube Headers – Which is Best for Your Exhaust?

You don’t need a fancy engineering degree to know that the first stop for exhaust gases exiting the vehicle’s engine is the headers. So, it’s no surprise that your headers’ design and makeup are key factors in your vehicle’s overall performance at varying RPMs. And choosing the perfect headers for your build will make a huge impact on your horsepower and torque.

Short vs Long Tube – Which is Better?

It’s very satisfying to listen to your engine on idle and to feel its powerful rhythm. But as soon as you step on the gas and hit the road, your headers come into play. And they will make or brake your ride’s performance. That is why you want to have the right headers. And you have two basic options when choosing headers: short tube or long tube. What sets them apart is the length of the exhaust port pipes. For shorty headers, the port pipes actually merge into a single exhaust pipe in a much shorter distance. For long tube headers, the exhaust pipes are much longer and merge farther out. Because of this, each design impacts back pressure in the exhaust system in a different way. Longer port pipes result in lower exhaust back pressure. This means improved oxygen intake and a boost in horsepower. You can read more about back pressure here. But don’t go thinking that long tube headers always outperform shorty headers. It’s not that simple. Horsepower and torque output depends on the RPM range. Long tube headers build a ton of power in the mid to high RPM range. They are the best option for high-rev vehicles, and track terrors. But they aren’t necessarily street legal, depending on emission standards. And usually, long tube headers are difficult to install. All the extra room they need inside the engine compartment may call for some costly reconfiguration. Shorty headers perform best in the idle to mid-RPM range. This makes them the perfect headers for vehicles that rely on low-RPM power, like a daily commuter or a work pickup that sees a lot of towing and hauling.
