Brian’s Mustang Shelby GT500

Comments (0) Featured, Product Reviews

Meet Brian Bonenfant from Vernon, British Columbia. He is a 71-year-old  retired teacher who loves the speed and power of Mustangs. In fact, he’s owned and modified about a dozen Mustangs in his lifetime, but this is his first Shelby.

Brian, how did you become a gearhead?

I love Mustangs and have always enjoyed making them perform, the best they possibly can. I’ve worked on a dozen Mustangs over the years but being retired, I have more time to enjoy it. For the past few years, I’ve taken my Shelby to multiple shows, especially the bigger ones, and it gets a lot of attention and compliments.

I also am part of an association that gets together for track days. They’re great because you get to see what your car can do for real: 160 miles per hour down the straights, and 100 miles per hour around the corners.

Tell us more about your Shelby GT500 - what’s going on under the hood?

I don’t want to change the looks of the car, so I haven’t made upgrades to the exterior. My focus is on power and speed. With different modifications, I’ve increased the Shelby’s horsepower to 600 (that’s 100 more than stock), and have plans to increase it to 650 to 700 hp. It really performs. It sticks like glue to the ground.

What are your favourite upgrades? What are you planning on upgrading next?

One of my favourites is the Spec Stage 3 Clutch that I had custom-made just south of Las Vegas. It’s a performance clutch for dragging and slipstreaming. The Airaid Cold Air Intake also was big for getting more airflow. The new Michelin tires are also a pretty special upgrade.

I have about $1,000 worth of add-ons still planned for the car, including a bigger cold air intake for one.

We love seeing the awesome upgrades to your GT500! Thanks for sharing it with us!
