How To Buy the Best Performance Muffler

Comments (0) Featured, Guides

If you’re like me, you love the sound of a powerful engine. Unfortunately, your stock vehicle is equipped with a restrictive muffler which basically works as a silencer… the good news is that all you have to do to un-cripple your engine is to upgrade to a high performance muffler! Aftermarket mufflers are designed using the latest in technology, design, and workmanship to give your vehicle the voice it’s been missing. But with so many options on market, where do you start looking? When you throw in a wide variety of materials, styles, and brands, you might be feeling overwhelmed with your choice. Don’t worry. We’re here to help you find the best performance muffler for your ride. So, what’s a performance muffler? A performance muffler differs from your stock unit in a few key areas. For one, its larger, more open design allows the smoothest flow of air with virtually no restriction. This larger internal space can accommodate a larger volume of exhaust flow. And that means your engine will not only sound better – it will also start to work more efficiently for more horsepower and improved fuel economy! Are you worried that upgrading your stock muffler will take you outside the law? That’s not the case. Most performance mufflers are designed to transform your engine’s sound by emphasising its natural tones… but their job is also to keep the decibel levels at a legal level. This means you’ll be able to both feel and hear your vehicle’s improved performance. What do I need to consider when shopping for a performance muffler? Like I said earlier, you have a lot of mufflers to choose from. And each has its set of advantages and disadvantages. So let me walk you through the different options. Power & Sound Race-ready mufflers, or mufflers with fewer baffles, will create less restriction for air flowing through. This means you’ll have more power (few restrictions = quicker air flow = more air volume = more power). And who doesn’t want more power, right? But it does come at a cost, so consider this decision carefully. If you opt for a race-ready muffler, you’ll probably end up with an aggressive sound that’s outside of the legal limit. Your vehicle will be super loud, and will draw (unwanted?) attention. But don’t think that you won’t get noticeable power gains with a quitter muffler. Even a super quiet performance muffler will deliver a huge amount of air flow. And it will be enough to satisfy the demands of your engine and any other performance mods you’ve made. Materials & Size Most performance mufflers are manufactured from stainless steel or aluminised steel. Both materials are of extremely high quality and guarantee durability and longevity. But one might be better for your vehicle, depending on where you live. If you live in a humid area, or where road salt is used, you’ll should consider buying a stainless steel performance muffler. The reason is that higher levels of moisture and salt are very corrosive and can be very damaging in the long run. There are 2 popular grades of stainless steel available: T409 and T304. T409 is the most common between the two, however T304 stainless steel has a higher corrosion resistance. If you live a drier area where humidity and road salt is not an issue, you’ll have no problem with an aluminised steel muffler, as the risk of corrosion will be extremely low. So, you can freely choose between muffler materials. And whatever your choice, you’ll enjoy the performance benefits without any concerns for sustaining corrosion damage. In terms of size, the rule of thumb is counterintuitive: the smaller the muffler, the louder it will be. The reason is that smaller mufflers are outfitted with fewer sound-reducing baffles. Muffler Fit & Installation The installation of a performance muffler is usually not a simple bolt-on job. If you’re getting a high performance unit, understand that it will have to be welded on, or clamped in place with specialty hardware. In fact, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to find yourself a direct-fit muffler, which means you’ll also have to make modifications to your vehicle’s stock exhaust system to install it. If that sounds too much for you, take a look at Flowmaster’s direct-fit mufflers. And keep your fingers crossed that they manufacture a muffler for your make and model. Flowmaster is actually one of very, very few companies that make direct-fit mufflers. So if you do find one, you should feel very special. But if you don’t find one, don’t feel discouraged. To find a muffler that’s closest to your stock unit, measure its case length, width, inlet and outlet sizes and layouts. And choose a performance muffler that is the closest match to your measurements. Trust recognised brands with a tradition in manufacturing performance mufflers. TDot Performance is an authorised dealer of industry leading names including Magnaflow, MBRP, Borla, Corsa, Megan Racing, Gibson Performance, BBK, Dynomax and many more! Will I Lose My Factory Warranty?? No. Thanks to the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, your factory warranty can’t be voided because you installed a performance muffler. You can read more about it here.

Mass Air Flow Sensors: Everything to Know

Comments (0) Guides

Your vehicle’s computerised sensors have one very important job. And that job is to feed the engine with the optimal ratio of air and fuel… so you can enjoy peak horsepower and performance! And the stock engine sensors are good at their job, unless you’ve changed the rules by installing any performance mods. If that’s the case, running your stock sensors is probably costing you some horsepower. So consider upgrading your vehicle with a performance mass air flow sensor. It’s one of the easiest ways to improve your engine’s performance. And why not take full advantage of your motor? How Do Mass Air flow Sensors Work? Your vehicle’s mass air flow sensor (also called “MAF”) works by heating up a thin wire to check the volume of air entering the engine. On the other side, your vehicle’s computer calculates the electrical resistance by seeing how long it takes for the passing air to cool down that same wire. And with this complete picture of air flow, the computer can tell the fuel injectors how much fuel they need to add or remove from the air-to-fuel mixture. Do I Really Need to Upgrade? If you’ve already modded your engine to increase air flow, you should upgrade your MAF. Your stock unit is probably not equipped to gauge a bigger volume of air, and this will entirely throw off its signals. The computer will direct an unbalanced mixture of air and fuel which will hurt your acceleration, high RPM horsepower, and fuel economy. A performance MAF has the physical capacity to measure a higher air volume. It also has improved programming for super accurate readings on that same high volume. So your vehicle’s computer will have all the info it needs to take care of that performance engine. Vroom! You should also consider upgrading your stock mass airflow sensor if you believe it’s been damaged. Wondering how that can happen? You might have damaged your MAF, if: – You sprayed the MAF sensor wire or air filter with injector or brake cleaner – You touched the MAF sensor elements and the oils and acids from your skin contaminated it – You haven’t cleaned your air intake’s filter, allowing dirt, bugs and other debris to make their way through the filter media and into your MAF sensor elements – You used way too much oil while cleaning your air filter – You did not use a filter at all with your air intake, so bugs, dirt, and debris contaminated the MAF – You have a low-slung cold air intake installed and did not protect the filter with a hydroshield – You installed an air intake without tightening your battery’s terminal connections, leading to damaging voltage spikes which could fry your MAF

How to Buy the Best Performance Throttle Body

Comments (1) Featured, Guides

Understanding the Throttle Body Your vehicle’s throttle body helps your motor by measuring the amount of airflow which enters your engine. There are two main types of throttle body systems. On older vehicles, a special cable attached to the throttle body’s moveable plates (also called butterflies) pulls them open when you step on the gas to let in fresh air. Newer models are usually equipped with a “drive-by-wire” system. This means that instead of sporting a cable, the throttle body is equipped with a potentiometer, the gas pedal with a potentiometer. Whichever of the two you have, both serve the same purpose. They open and close your throttle body’s “butterflies” to let cool air inside your engine. And the more the fresh air, the greater the power. But… sometimes your throttle body is not large enough to feed enough air to your engine. Even when its butterflies are completely opened. In those cases, the engine’s power potential is being limited. And the only way around that is to upgrade to a performance throttle body. What To Look For in a Performance Throttle Body The only way to unleash your vehicle’s potential power is by upgrading to a performance throttle body with a larger internal bore. This will deliver the needed air flow inside your engine and will unlock that dormant horsepower. But don’t make the mistake of purchasing the biggest throttle body you find! After all, horsepower is not only generated by a high air flow. Horsepower is generated by an interplay of air volume, velocity, and turbulence. And if one of those factors is off, you will hurt your engine’s power. That’s why if you install a throttle body that’s too big, you will end up with too much air volume at the expense of velocity and turbulence. So, what’s the right size? A throttle body’s internal bore is available in several different sizes, shown in millimetres. And the size of the internal bore dictates at what RMP your vehicle will generate the most horsepower. The general rule is: the bigger the size, the higher the RPM needed for a kick of power. If your new throttle body is too big your vehicle will feel tired at lower RPMs, while really taking off powerfully at higher RPMs (when the engine’s demand of air flow matches up with the the internal bore’a bigger size). And this is why going with a larger throttle body could be exactly what you need. It will deliver the boost in performance you’re looking for without sacrificing acceleration. Remember these three simple rules when shopping for a new performance throttle body: – Confirm that the throttle body you want is emissions-legal in your province or state. – Bigger is not necessarily better when choosing a throttle body. If you’re vehicle is close to stock, you’ll be best off with an only slightly bigger size. – Think about the future mods you’re planning to make. If you’re planning major performance upgrades, invest in a bigger throttle body from the get-to. This will ensure you have the air flow you’ll need down the road.

2017 Ford F-450 Super Duty Tows 32,500 Lbs.

Comments (0) Industry News

Ford has just released some truly impressive numbers on its all-new 2017 F-450 Super Duty. The pickup’s specs claim the model will bump up its towing capacity with 1,300 lbs. to a towing maximum (with a gooseneck trailer) of 32,500 pounds. And the big credit here goes, for one, to Ford’s lightweight all-aluminium body which will cut down its total weight by 350 lbs. while also adding strength and resilience. The impressive towing capacity is also helped by the model’s upgraded fully boxed frame which is 95% steel for almost 25 times more stiffness compared to the previous model. This huge towing improvement takes the 2017 F-450 to the coveted best-in-class place, claims Ford. And the numbers are good all around. The F-450’s fifth-wheel towing is (best-in-class) 27,500 lbs. Its conventional towing is (best-in-class) 21,000 lbs. Its max payload capacity is (best-in-class) 7,630 lbs. And things look just as good with Ford’s lesser Super Duty models, the F-250 and F-350, with a (best-in-class) towing capacity of 18,000 lbs. According to Ford, fifth-wheel towing for the F-450 is best-in-class at 27,500 pounds, while conventional towing is also class-leading at 21,000 pounds. The truck is now rated to have a maximum payload capacity of 7,630 pounds, which Ford claims is best-in-class. Figures for the lesser Super Duty models – the F-250 and F-350 – have also risen, with both being able to tow up to 18,000 pounds, another class-leading claim by Ford. How does the competition compare? Let’s take look at the 2016 Ram 3500 model. It’s towing maximum is rated t 31,210 lbs. The Class 3 pickup can tow almost as much as the Class 4 F-450. Yes, it’s very close. But Ford’s 2017 Super Duty lineup is getting much more than a lighter and stronger body. The models are equipped with a better performing engine – 6.7L turbodiesel Power Stroke V8 will give you 440 hp with 925 lbs-ft of torque. The alternative 6.2L gas V8 also shows off modest improvements: while its output is unchanged at 385 hp, its torque is bumped from 405 to 430 lbs-ft. There’s no pricing information available at this point for Ford’s “best-in-class” Super Duties, but if Ford has you sold, you won’t have to wait long!
What do you think about Ford’s 2017 Super Duty lineup?

4 Easy Rules for Mudding

Comments (0) Featured, Guides

When the snows melt, the rains start to fall and the ground fills with water, off-roaders far and wide smile and officially welcome in the mud season. No, this is a not a poem. But it’s hard not to get carried away on the topic of mudding. There is something very special about driving your 4×4 for a muddy run through marshes, bogs and fields. I mean, there is nothing that compares to playing in the mud. But you still need to be smart about it, or you run the risk of ruining your trip as well as costly damage to your rig. And knowing how to handle yourself in the mud is more than simple common sense. So whether the beaten path takes you to a muddy logging trail, a slushy bog, a running creek, or a manmade trail run, following our 4 simple rules will keep you safe and out of trouble. Rule #1: Keep Moving to… Keep Moving mudding-1 The feeling of driving in mud can be described as something between ice skating and walking in quicksand. And your goal is to keep the balance between the two. To find that sweet spot, you need to keep your wheels spinning. If you’re moving, keep doing it by keeping your foot on the gas. If you feel that your tires are spinning without helping your vehicle move forward, apply less throttle until you feel them grabbing on again. Never step on the brakes when you’re driving in mud. You can brake when you clear of it. It’s advisable to only go mudding in a 4WD vehicle. Rule #2: Become Familiar with Mud mudding-3 Mud comes in all shapes and sizes… and textures. And you need to know them. For off-roading purposes, mud is grouped into 3 main types. Each has its own distinct characteristics and requires appropriate tires. Clay Mud is sticky and will cling onto your tire tread. And to get through you need a nice clean tire. The trade secret here is to spray your tires with cooking spray or WD40 to keep them slippery and mud-repellant. Dirt Mud is similar to clay mud. It will stick onto your tread, so you still need to spray your tires. The general rule is if you have a bottom, go with tires that have good dig. If you don’t have a bottom, you’ll need flotation tires to drive through. Watery Mud is tricky because it can hide debris and deep holes you never suspected. So drive as slow as possible and as fast as necessary. And don’t worry too much about the tire type here, a good set of street tires will do the job. Rule #3: Properly Equip Your Vehicle mudding-4 By now you’ve figured out that using the right tires is crucial. There are two directions you can go with: you can get narrow tires that will cut through the mud to get through, or lager, wider tires that will float on top of the mud to create the widest traction path. Something else you need to think about is your winch. Obviously, you need one. And you should know how to use it in mud. Be smart and think ahead. Pre-stage a rear tow point with s strap to your receiver hitch to save yourself the headache that will come if you get buried once you’re in too deep. And when you’re winching, know that mud creates suction. So pull a little at a time and pause frequently to allow your winch to cool off. Rule #4: Mud-Proof & De-Mud mudding-5 You need to be aware of the risks of mudding. You can easily get a flat tire, damage your driveshaft and axle shaft, or hydro-lock your engine. That’s why you should mud-proof your vehicle’s engine, suspension, axles and transmission. You can do this by spraying everything with WD40 or cooking spray help mud slide off quickly. And bring a few water jugs with you for your windows. Mud can seriously damage glass, so before running your wipers rinse your windows to prevent any ugly scratching. When you’re off the trail, clean your vehicle as soon as you can. If you let the mud dry, it becomes more likely to break parts and throw off your driveline balance. It will shorten your braking distance and can even rust your frames and other metal parts within just a few days.
